WOMEX closes its 30th anniversary edition with a lavish ceremony in Manchester
30 October 2024

The 30th anniversary edition of WOMEX concluded successfully with a lavish awards ceremony at the Aviva Studios in Manchester, marking the end of five incredible days filled with exciting concerts, meaningful discussions and international connections.

The event ended with an unforgettable performance by Hermeto Pascoal’s band, The Mothership, which drew thunderous applause and brought the entire hall to its feet. Pascoal was awarded the prestigious WOMEX Artist Award 2024 for his remarkable and uncompromising artistic vision for his 74-year career as a musician and composer. Despite Hermeto’s absence due to health reasons, his iconic band, called Nave Mãe (The Mothership), lit up the stage with their special performance. Hermeto’s son and the rest of the band members accepted the award on his behalf, and he made a virtual inclusion with a thank-you video message.

The Professional Excellence Award was presented to the international non-governmental organization In Place of War (IPOW), recognized for its impact through art and music to create lasting change for people and communities affected by conflict around the world. Ruth Daniel, CEO and Artistic Director of In Place of War, accepted the award along with her team and shared:

“Our work is more needed than ever. We must use our music and our platforms to call for peace, for a ceasefire, because violence is never a solution… The burden on artists is enormous given the horrors we see every day on our screens. That is why I dedicate this award to every person, every artist and activist who fights for peace and a more just world… Let us be that change and let us achieve it together.”

The 20 best independent labels of the year were also honored, in recognition of their essential role in supporting and promoting diverse international music.

The Bulgarian Music Association was once again present with a national stand, presenting the local music scene and its specially prepared catalogue of featured artists and festivals. The stand was realized with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Bulgaria.

This year, WOMEX brought together 2,850 music professionals, including 290 performers, from over 45 countries. The event featured 61 showcases on 7 stages, 18 music documentaries, as well as 88 speakers and mentors who provoked participants with discussions on current issues shaping the global music industry. The trade fair with 738 exhibitors and 246 stands was a lively place for networking and collaboration.

Diversity, inclusion and cultural exchange were the main themes throughout the event. WOMEX delegates immersed themselves in a wide range of musical genres and engaging discussions. This 30th anniversary edition of WOMEX further established the event as a leading global platform, creating meaningful collaborations and new opportunities for artists and industry professionals.

As the most influential gathering for the global music community, WOMEX continues to inspire with its commitment to celebrating music and cultures from every corner of the world.

The “Musical Guide to Stage Spaces in Bulgaria” is the result of the two-year project for wide-ranging mapping of the music sector in the country, which the BMA launched in 2020 as part of its sectoral initiatives. The aim of the project is to improve information provision and support the development of effective cultural policies and financing mechanisms.

The application is open to all stage spaces in Bulgaria, offering easy and quick access to an extensive array of data. This enables artists-performers to plan their activities without wasting time on additional research, making the process more efficient and easy.

We believe that this product will be of great benefit not only to the music sector, but also to all other performing arts, helping to facilitate their integration and development in the cultural scene of Bulgaria.

The app will be free for download at the end of January 2025.
