The official presentation of the results of the large-scale study “Economic, Environmental and Social Indicators of Artistic Festivals in Sofia” was held on May 29, 2026 in the “Reflections” hall (Slaveykov Square 4A). It is part of a project of the Bulgarian Festival Association, implemented with the support of the Sofia Program “Culture” and in which the Bulgarian Music Association (BMA) is a key partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The study sheds new light on the role of festivals as a strategic resource and the main driver of cultural life, economy and urban environment in the capital. The data from the study were presented by Mirena Staneva – Executive Director of BMA and Diana Andreeva-Popyordanova – Director of the Observatory of the Economy of Culture, lecturer at the UNWE and NATFA “Krustyo Sarafov”. They outlined the main trends, challenges and specific recommendations for the development of the sector. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mirena Staneva presented a detailed analysis based on the results of a survey that was distributed among festival organizers in the capital. The data shows an extraordinary diversity of private structures that are behind the implementation of the events. Some of the festivals are distinguished by impressive sustainability over time (the earliest dates back to 1970), with the majority of them being annual and covering different types of art. There is a serious concentration of events during the summer season and at the end of the year, and among the main locations are the National Palace of Culture, open urban spaces and innovative alternative locations. The study reports that the festivals successfully attract a wide, intergenerational audience (with a focus on young people and middle-aged people), and are mainly aimed at local residents. An important emphasis is on educational and accompanying events such as master classes, academies and interactive forms with audience participation. Although they are currently limited in terms of financial resources, experts point to them as an excellent practice for attracting new audiences and extending the \u201clife\u201d of the festivals. A discussion arose about the difficulty in finding external sponsors, which is due to the deteriorating economic and geopolitical situation not only at the national but also at the international level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The economic effects presented by Diana Andreeva-Popiordanova signal serious structural challenges. Public funding is currently \u201con the brink\u201d, which puts the realization of events at constant risk. The sector relies extremely heavily on volunteerism, temporary collaborators and own resources \u2013 a factor that demonstrates high civic engagement, but also makes festivals vulnerable in terms of their long-term sustainability. Despite their small organizational teams, festivals remain a key source of income through artist fees, payments for copyright and related rights, as well as through the engagement of external performers. The study proves that events ensure a strong share of Bulgarian participation, serve as an indispensable platform for debuts and premieres of local artists and give them international visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Festivals in Sofia have a proven positive effect on the quality of life in the urban environment by democratizing access to art and the active inclusion of young people and marginalized groups, and reducing social barriers. They also build a sense of belonging to Sofia and help form communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Regarding environmental sustainability, the data shows that it is currently not systematically monitored due to lack of resources. Isolated practices to limit harmful impacts (e.g. waste management) are more common than comprehensive measurement of the carbon footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on the study, five key areas for reforms were formulated, which the Bulgarian Music Association supports:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n
Differentiated support – introducing simpler procedures for financing small festivals and concluding multi-annual framework agreements for large and proven events.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Assessment of public value – creating criteria for access to culture, incentives for social quotas and developing a template for measuring social impact.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Focus on young and local artists – encouraging partnerships with higher education institutions of the arts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Data and monitoring – introducing a minimum set of indicators, preparing a periodic analytical municipal report and creating an expert advisory group.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Green policies and territorial balance – defining a basic green standard for events and stimulating environmental educational initiatives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
As a partner in the project, the Bulgarian Music Association will continue to actively work on the implementation of these recommendations, establishing festival culture as a strategic resource for the sustainable cultural and economic development of Bulgaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
